Taking Charge of Your Mental Health: How Montanans Can Access Free, Evidence-Based CBT

Taking care of your mental health is just as important as taking care of your physical health. But for many Montanans, getting the right support can feel complicated. Between long waitlists, high costs, and the logistics of traveling to appointments—especially in rural areas—finding relief for stress, anxiety, or depression can be a hurdle.

Fortunately, modern mental health care is becoming more accessible. One of the most effective treatments available today is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)—and thanks to a state-funded initiative, adult Montanans can currently access a CBT-based program completely free of charge.

Here is a look at why CBT is considered the gold standard for treating anxiety and depression, and how you can access it from the comfort of your own home.

What is Evidence-Based CBT?

If you have ever looked into mental health treatments, you have probably seen the term "evidence-based." This simply means that a therapy has been rigorously tested in scientific studies and consistently proven to work.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is one of the most widely researched and highly effective evidence-based treatments in the world.

Unlike therapies that focus heavily on your past, CBT is highly practical and present-focused. It operates on a core principle: our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are all connected.

When we are struggling with anxiety or depression, it is easy to fall into negative thought traps (like assuming the worst will happen or being overly critical of ourselves). CBT teaches you how to:

  • Identify unhelpful or negative thought patterns.

  • Challenge and reframe those thoughts to be more constructive.

  • Change the behaviors that are keeping you stuck.

Think of CBT as learning a new set of tools. It helps you build the skills to communicate more confidently, manage your stress triggers, and re-engage in activities that make you feel good.

Enter 'Thrive for Montana'

While CBT is incredibly effective, traditional weekly therapy isn’t always accessible to everyone. That is where Thrive for Montana comes in.

Thrive is an online, interactive program designed for people who want to take charge of their emotional well-being. It takes the core, evidence-based skills of CBT and packages them into a customized, self-paced digital experience.

Through engaging videos and tailored feedback, Thrive helps you track your progress and gain real insight into how you are doing. The program actually responds to your inputs, customizing the experience based on where you are doing well and where you have room for improvement.

Why Try Thrive?

  • It’s highly accessible: You can use it anywhere, anytime, via a computer internet browser or a mobile app.

  • It’s entirely free: The project is funded by the Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS) and administered by Montana State University. (Note: This project is distinct from the Bozeman-based social service non-profit also named "Thrive").

  • It’s proven: Because it is rooted in CBT, it relies on the same methods a professional therapist would use to help you cope with stress and low moods.

Who is Eligible?

To participate in the Thrive program, you must:

  1. Be a resident of Montana.

  2. Be 18 years of age or older.

  3. Have regular access to broadband internet (via a smartphone or computer).

  4. Be experiencing at least mild symptoms of depression or anxiety.

(Because this is currently running as a research study to measure the program's impact, some participants will get access to Thrive right away, while others will get access after an 8-week waiting period).

Start Feeling Better Today

You do not have to wait until you are completely overwhelmed to seek help, and you do not have to navigate your mental health alone. Building resilience and learning to manage stress is something everyone can benefit from.

If you are ready to take charge of your well-being and learn proven CBT skills, you can apply to join the study and access the program today.
